IWRM Final Event
Launching Libya’s IWRM Dashboard: A National Platform for Smarter, Inclusive Water Governance

Libya is facing growing water challenges — from scarcity and aging infrastructure to rising pressure caused by climate change. Communities across the country are increasingly affected, especially in rural and mountainous areas where water access and management systems are fragile.

To help address these challenges and strengthen sustainable, community-led solutions, the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) project was launched. Funded by the Kingdom of Denmark and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and implemented by the Organization of Development Pioneers (ODP), the project has worked to empower communities — especially women and youth — to play an active role in water governance.
One of the key milestones of this initiative is now live: the IWRM Dashboard, a national digital platform designed to support learning, resources, and collaboration in water management across Libya.
From Yefren to the Nation: A Model for Community-Led Water Governance
The IWRM project began in the municipality of Yefren, located in the Jabal Nafusa region, where water scarcity and climate stress have increasingly challenged local communities. Through the project, Yefren became a practical example of how local stakeholders can lead sustainable solutions when given the right tools and support.
Project activities in Yefren included:
-
Local water assessments to better understand challenges and priorities
-
Capacity-building workshops for civil society and community actors
-
Leadership training for women and youth to enhance participation and decision-making
-
Creation of digital learning resources to expand knowledge and outreach
As these efforts grew, it became clear that the lessons, tools, and data developed through the project could benefit stakeholders nationwide — leading to the creation of the online IWRM Dashboard, now scaled into a national platform.
What is the IWRM Dashboard?
The IWRM Dashboard is an online hub that brings together water-related knowledge, tools, learning modules, and expert connections in one accessible space.
It is designed to support:
✅ NGOs and civil society organizations
✅ Local leaders and community actors
✅ Government institutions and decision-makers
✅ Researchers and students
✅ Youth and women leaders involved in sustainable development
By improving access to reliable resources and encouraging collaboration, the dashboard strengthens the foundation for informed decision-making and participatory water governance across Libya.
Key Features of the Dashboard
1. IWRM Resource Library
The dashboard includes a growing digital library of IWRM-related materials, including:
-
reports and studies
-
guidelines and policy resources
-
practical tools for community projects
-
reference materials for sustainable water planning
This library serves as a centralized space for anyone working on water management to access reliable information and best practices.
2. E-Learning Modules
The platform offers interactive e-learning modules to help users build knowledge and skills in areas such as:
-
Integrated Water Resources Management principles
-
sustainable water governance
-
climate change and water resilience
-
community engagement and participatory planning
These modules help expand capacity-building beyond workshops, reaching learners anytime and anywhere.
3. Experts Database
A key strength of the IWRM Dashboard is its experts database, which connects users to professionals and specialists in water-related fields.
This feature supports:
-
technical consultation
-
networking and partnerships
-
collaboration opportunities
-
improved access to expertise for local initiatives
By connecting people and knowledge, the dashboard promotes stronger coordination among water stakeholders in Libya.
Why This Matters
The launch of the IWRM Dashboard is an important step toward sustainable and inclusive water governance because it:
