Learning Outcomes

  • Apply household-level water conservation measures.
  • Understand greywater basics and safe reuse.
  • Plan small community conservation campaigns.

Overview

Libya is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world, with over 80% of its population concentrated in coastal cities that rely heavily on groundwater from the Great Man-Made River (GMR). Agricultural use consumes more than 80% of total water resources, but much is lost through inefficient irrigation and poor water management. Conservation at both household and community levels is critical to reduce pressure on already-stressed aquifers and ensure sustainable water availability for future generations.

Lesson 1: Household measures (fixtures, leaks)
This lesson explores simple household actions that can greatly reduce water use, from using efficient fixtures to improving everyday water-saving habits.
Lesson 2: Greywater & reuse
This lesson introduces the concept of greywater reuse and how safely recycling household water can help ease pressure on freshwater resources.
Lesson 3: Community-level actions (schools, mosques, farms)
This lesson highlights how communities can save water through collective actions in schools, religious sites, and farms, and by identifying and addressing local water losses.
Lesson 4: Behavior change campaigns
This lesson focuses on how behavior change campaigns can promote long-term water conservation by raising awareness and encouraging responsible practices within communities.
